Thrush is fungal infection in the mouth that causes the tongue to turn white. This is more common in babies and young children.

What is Pediatric Thrush (Oral Candida Infection)?

Thrush is caused by Candida (fungus), found naturally in the mouth and on the skin. Thrush is not a serious problem and can be treated easily.

  • Review medial history
  • Physical exam (including mouth)

  • Antibiotics
  • Inhaled corticosteroids
  • Pacifier use
  • Weakened immune system

How is Pediatric Thrush (Oral Candida Infection) treated?

Treatment depends on the age of the child, symptoms and medial history.  Your child's physician will discuss treatment options with you.

Prevention

  • Boil bottle nipples and pacifiers and wash cups with soap and warm water
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before and after caring for your child.
